Phonic Lesson
Phonics Lesson 1
Intended Grade Level: 1st Grade Reading
Activity Title: Matching Sounds
State Standard:
CO- Colorado Academic Standards
Subject: Reading, Writing and Communicating (12/11/2009)
Grade: Grade 1
Standard: Standard 2 Reading for All Purposes
Expectation: 2. Decoding words require the application of alphabetic principles, letter sounds, and letter combinations
Outcome: a. Decode words with single consonants, basic consonant digraphs (such as th, ch, ng), and consonant blends
Outcome: d. Accurately decode unknown words that follow a predictable letter/sound relationship (TaskStream, n.d.)
Instructional Objective: The teacher will describe graphemes and phonemes and have students match phonemes with their appropriate letter by writing down words that have similar sounds. The student will complete this activity with 80% accuracy.
Behavioral Objective: The student will use letter and sound recognition to see similarities and differences in various words’ letters and sounds.
Materials:
- Piece of Blank Paper
- Pencil
- Magnetic word cards using words from the Durr Sight Word List that have similar
and different sounds (you can also just write the words on the board or use
flashcards).
Sequence of Lesson:
- Introduce Lesson
- Explain that letters and letter combinations (graphemes) create sounds (phonemes)
- Build Background by asking what sounds letters make (what sound does the letter c make? /c/ (long) /c?/ (short))
- Have the student match words with similar sounds
- The teacher will put a word card with one word on it up on the board
i. Have the student fold a piece of paper in half and write the word on the left side of a piece of paper
-
- Read the word out loud and have the student say it out loud
- Have four or five other word cards visible that have the same sound as the first word card in it (also have a word or two that does not have the same sound in it but might have the same letter)
i. Have the student read all the word cards out loud
ii. Have the student determine on their own what words have the same sound in it as the original word and have them write those words on the right side of the paper
-
- Ask the student to read the words they wrote that have similar sounds
i. Put the corresponding word cards next to the original word to create a visual
- Repeat this process several times using different words and different sounds
Assessment:
- Re-read out loud the students corresponding words and emphasize the matching sounds
- Provide feedback by checking for words that do not match the correct sound
- If a word does not match, ask the student to explain why they wrote the word down by having them say the sounds of each letter
- Describe various letter sounds (by using examples such as the letter c can be used in cat or city; short vs. long) if necessary to create understanding for the student
- Students will make necessary corrections on their paper and use the paper to practice phonemes.
Evaluation:
- The student will be able to match words with similar phonemes
